Bible Lesson: Samuel was a little boy like you.  He lived in the temple with a priest named Eli.  They took care of all the things in the temple.  (The place where the Lords’ people worshiped our true God).  He did what Eli told him to do.  Should we do what our parents tell us to do?  (Show obey pictures.)

One night Samuel heard a voice calling his name so he got up and went to Eli because he thought it was Eli calling him.  After this happened three times Eli realized it was the Lord  calling Samuel so he told him to go back and when he heard his name called he should answer “Speak Lord for your servant is listening.”

God talked to Samuel and told him to tell Eli what he said.  Samuel was afraid to tell Eli but Eli finally got him to tell him.  It was not good news because Eli had not been obeying the Lord..

What the Lord told Samuel did happen and so people knew that Samuel listened to the Lord.

Use mat and blanket – Let them pretend to be Samuel and the Lord. When one says “Samuel, Samuel”  Samuel Says “Speak Lord your servant is listening” ,

Tell them “You can listen to the Lord too.  You need to be quiet in order to hear him.  Just like …..  . (Have a worker e listening to music on her Iphone.  You try to talk to her but she doesn’t hear you because she s listening to the music.

Game:  Whisper directions to each child and have them do it. (examples ; clap your hands; touch your nose, stomp your feet; turn around; etc.)  They all have to be quiet so they can hear.

Puppet Show: T Teacher S Sally

S I couldn’t watch TV  all afternoon!!!!

T  What happened

S Well my mom told me to go tell dad dinner was ready but I was listening to my favorite movie “Little Red Riding Hood’ and I  didn’t even  hear her.

T  So your mother was upset with you.

S Yes because they were in a hurry to eat so they could go to  a meeting.  My grandma came to watch me .I got bored just swinging on my swing.  So I complained to my grandma.  She told me how important it is to listen when mom and dad talk to me. My job for God is to listen and obey my mom and dad.

T  That’s true and is is important to listen to  The Lord too. One time I didn’t listen when the Lord told me to drive a different way and I had to wait 10 minutes in traffic and was late for work.  (Give puppet kisses to those who want one.)

Hearing God Illustration:  Have one of your workers busy  keying in a message on her iphone (or yours if they don’t have theirs with them).  You talk to her but she is so busy she doesn’t hear you.  Clear your throat but she still doesn’t look up,   You try again to talk to her but she is not listening.  Tell the boys and girls that God wants to talk to us but we don’t listen.  Sometimes He just wants to say “I love you”.  Have your helper look up and smile when you say that.
